What is Forest Bathing?

Forest Bathing is a wellness technique that promotes health and wellbeing. The practice was developed in Japan in the 80's (Shinrin Yoku) to address the growing health crisis that stemmed from a society that tended to be indoors and sedentary the majority of the time. During a guided forest bath, the guide provides a safe space for people to participate in a series of invitations that encourage connecting with nature through all five senses. It is not a hike or a nature class. Nor does it involve actually bathing in water. It is a very accessible way for people to simply be in nature.

The health benefits are innumerable. Forest bathing supports physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual wellness. Studies show that the practice prevents unhealthy stress and burnout. There is evidence that forest bathing also boosts the immune system, lowers cortisol levels, improves blood pressure, and much more. Creativity is also stimulated.

The experience of forest bathing is difficult to fully capture in words. Experience the practice for yourself! Erika will post her upcoming public forest baths on the home page of this website. She also offers private group forest bathing sessions upon request.
